If you’re overwhelmed by clutter right now, you are not alone.
Early January is when many clients tell me they want one simple thing: to start the year feeling in control. They want to feel like the year is “cleared out,” so they can move forward without anything hanging over them.
And that’s exactly what a good post-holiday reset gives you.
Why January Feels So Hard
The holidays are social. January is reality.
In December, clutter feels temporary. In January, it starts to feel stressful. You’re back to work, back to routines, and suddenly your home feels like another to-do list.
That’s clutter stress, and it shouldn’t come with shame.
Clutter Doesn’t Always Look Messy
Clutter isn’t always piles on the floor.
Some homes look perfect until you open a cabinet and it’s a mishmash of items with no real home. Other times clutter looks like a neat pile of papers or mail, but it hasn’t been processed. It’s still “waiting,” and it creates stress.
If you are organizing when overwhelmed, start by noticing what’s really bothering you, not what looks worst.
The Big Myth That Keeps People Stuck
“I don’t have time.”
This is the most common myth I hear after the holidays. January starts with a bang and everyone is off and running. But waiting doesn’t help. Clutter gets louder when you ignore it.
The key is learning how to start decluttering in a way that feels manageable.
Step 1: Do a Quick Walkthrough
Before you touch anything, do a 10-minute walkthrough.
Ask yourself:
- What’s bothering me the most?
- What space feels stressful?
- What is already working?
That last question matters. If something is working, you can use it as a model for the rest of the home.
Step 2: Make a Simple Plan
A plan does not have to be complicated.
It can be a short list of what you want to tackle, in order. The point is to stay focused and build momentum.
If your home feels overwhelming, do not try to do it all in one weekend.
Step 3: Start Where You Live (Not Where You Store)
One of the biggest mistakes people make is starting in the wrong space.
They head straight for the junk room or storage room. But the impact happens in the spaces you use every day. That’s where you feel relief fastest.
Three Quick Wins That Work Every Time
1) Clear one kitchen counter
A clear counter is not about tossing everything. It’s about deciding where items will live.
If it doesn’t belong in the kitchen, move it out. If you use it daily, keep it. If you don’t, it should not be taking up valuable space.
2) Reset the entryway
Make homes for:
- shoes
- jackets
- keys
- bags
Hooks, bins, and a simple key bowl can change your daily routine immediately.
3) Pick up the living room floor
Legos, papers, shopping bags, random clutter. Get it off the floor. Instant visual calm.
Use “High-Value Real Estate”
High-value real estate is eye level and easy to reach.
Keep daily essentials there.
Anything seasonal, rarely used, or “just in case” should live higher up or further back. If you’re storing a Christmas item on your bathroom counter, it’s in the wrong place.
The Easiest Items to Let Go of in January
If you want fast progress, start with what is already decided for you:
- expired food
- expired bathroom products
- broken holiday decor
What to Do With Holiday Clutter
- Holiday cards: If there’s no personal note, recycle immediately.
- Packaging: Recycle it. Do not let it linger.
- Kids’ toys: Have kids choose what to donate, and what a new toy replaces.
And if you have too much stuff at home, remember: you do not need to fix everything today. You just need a smart starting point.
A Gift Is Not an Obligation
Many people keep gifts out of guilt.
But a gift is given. You are not responsible for keeping it forever. If you will not use it, donate it.
The Real Goal
Your goal is not a perfect home.
The goal is to make the things that matter accessible, and to let go of what creates stress.
Often, you don’t have a clutter problem. You have an accessibility problem, or a container problem.
