Summer is the busiest moving season of the year.
Families often plan moves around school schedules, professionals take advantage of summer flexibility, and many people simply prefer not to move during colder months. The problem is that everyone else has the same idea.
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is waiting too long to start preparing.
What’s interesting is that people often know they are moving months in advance, but they don’t start thinking seriously about the move until a few weeks before moving day. That’s usually when the panic sets in.
Movers are booking up. Building elevator reservations are limited. Donations haven’t been scheduled. Nobody has started packing. And suddenly there’s an enormous amount to do in a very short period of time.
If you’re moving this summer, the best thing you can do is start earlier than you think you need to.
The First Step Isn’t Packing
Many people assume that packing is the first step in the moving process.
It’s not.
Before a single box is packed, you need to determine what you’re actually taking with you.
One of the most important moving organization tips I can offer is to make decisions before moving day, not after.
If you’re moving into a new home, get a floor plan as early as possible. Measure your furniture and determine where key pieces will live in the new space. Just because you’re moving into a larger home doesn’t mean everything should come with you.
In fact, moving is often one of the best opportunities to evaluate what still serves you and what doesn’t.
The same is true if you’re moving into storage.
Many people assume they’ll simply store everything and sort it out later. The reality is that storing things costs money. The more you store, the larger the storage unit you’ll need. And if everything is packed without a plan, finding important items later can become incredibly frustrating.
Before you begin packing, take time to declutter before moving. Every item you decide not to move saves time, money, and effort later.
An Organized Moving Guide Starts With Planning
One of the reasons moves become overwhelming is that there are so many moving parts.
A good organized moving guide includes much more than hiring a mover.
My moving preparation checklist usually starts with:
- Obtaining a floor plan for the new home
- Reserving move-out dates with your building
- Scheduling elevator reservations, if required
- Coordinating move dates with movers, property managers, and building staff
- Confirming move-in procedures at the destination
- Measuring furniture to ensure it will fit
- Scheduling donation pickups before packing begins
Many of these details seem small until you discover that the elevator is unavailable, the sofa won’t fit through the doorway, or your preferred moving company is fully booked.
Starting early gives you options.
Waiting limits them.
Packing and Organizing Are Not the Same Thing
At Organize Me, we talk a lot about strategic packing.
When packing and organizing are done well, you know what’s in every box and where those items will eventually live.
The challenge is that many people pack with only one goal: getting everything into boxes.
Movers are experts at moving belongings safely and efficiently. They are not necessarily thinking about how you want to live on the other end.
That’s where strategic packing comes in.
When we pack, we’re constantly thinking about the unpacking process. We consider how rooms will function, which items should stay together, and how clients will access what they need immediately after the move.
We also use clear labeling systems so boxes can be directed to the correct rooms and unpacked more efficiently.
The question isn’t simply, “How do we get this into a box?”
The better question is, “What will it be like to open this box in the new home?”
The Move Isn’t Over When the Truck Leaves
This is probably the biggest misconception people have about moving.
Many people think the move ends when the movers finish unloading.
In reality, that’s often when the next phase begins.
You still need to unpack, organize, put things away, break down boxes, and make the home functional.
That’s why unpacking services have become such an important part of modern move management.
People often call us after the move because they’re overwhelmed by the sheer number of boxes sitting in their new home. They know where they want to live, but they don’t know where everything should go.
What many people discover is that unpacking isn’t just unpacking.
It’s organizing.
It’s consolidating.
It’s making decisions.
It’s creating systems.
Sometimes it’s continuing the editing process that should have happened before the move.
The goal isn’t simply to empty boxes. The goal is to create a home that reflects how you actually live.
A Smoother Move Starts Earlier Than You Think
The most successful moves aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets or the largest teams.
They’re the ones that start with a plan.
If you’re moving this summer, give yourself time to make thoughtful decisions about what you’re taking, where it’s going, and how you want your new home to function.
A little preparation now can save a tremendous amount of stress later.
At Organize Me, we help busy families, professionals, and older adults navigate every phase of the moving process, from planning and decluttering to strategic packing, move management, unpacking, and organizing.
