Moving in New York City is challenging at any time of year, but the holiday season adds another layer of complexity. Between crowded streets, winter weather, building restrictions, and limited availability of movers and other professionals, December can be one of the most difficult times to relocate.
At Organize Me Inc., we’ve managed moves during the holidays, and my advice is simple: If you can, schedule your move before December 15. If that’s not possible, consider waiting until January.
Of course, sometimes moving during the holidays in NYC is unavoidable. Here’s how to make the experience as manageable as possible.
Check Building Restrictions Before Scheduling Your Move
Many NYC apartment buildings restrict moving dates and hours, particularly during the holidays. Some prohibit moves between Christmas and New Year’s, while others limit contractor access from Thanksgiving to December.
Before committing to a date, confirm the rules at both your current and future buildings, including:
- Permitted moving dates and hours
- Service elevator reservations
- Certificate of insurance (COI) requirements
- Weekend and holiday restrictions
We’ve encountered situations where clients didn’t realize their building required movers to finish by 4 p.m., even though unloading wasn’t scheduled to begin until 1 p.m.
These details matter. Professional moving coordination helps ensure that everyone involved understands the restrictions before moving day.
Plan Around Holiday Schedules and NYC Traffic
December brings tourists, shoppers, deliveries, and year-end business activity that make navigating New York City particularly difficult.
Availability is another consideration. Movers, building personnel, and move management teams have families and holiday plans, too.
I remember one client who changed their moving date from before Christmas to the week between Christmas and New Year’s. Several of our team members had already scheduled time off, and then a major blizzard hit the city.
Snow and ice made loading and unloading extremely challenging. Moving equipment was difficult to maneuver, and the entire process took longer than anticipated.
It’s a perfect example of why early planning and some flexibility are so important.
Preserve Your Holiday Traditions
Moving doesn’t have to mean giving up the celebrations that matter to your family.
We’ve worked with clients who wanted to enjoy one last holiday in their longtime home before relocating. In one case, a family celebrated Christmas, then left town while we packed their decorations and managed their move.
Another family wanted to celebrate Passover in the home they were selling. We packed and moved everything they didn’t need for the holiday, leaving their celebration essentials in place. Afterward, we returned to pack the remaining belongings.
The lesson is that a thoughtful moving plan can accommodate your family’s traditions rather than disrupt them.
Prepare for Winter Weather
Anyone planning a winter move in NYC needs to consider the possibility of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and icy sidewalks.
These conditions can slow movers considerably, make equipment difficult to use, and expose boxes and packing materials to moisture.
Sometimes a move simply has to be postponed.
The key is maintaining communication among the movers, building management, and everyone coordinating the relocation. Unexpected problems happen, but there’s almost always a solution.
And when movers are working in particularly difficult weather conditions, I strongly recommend tipping generously.
Your Holiday Moving Checklist
If you’re planning a December relocation, keep this holiday moving checklist handy:
- Confirm moving restrictions and elevator reservations at both buildings.
- Book your NYC moving services and move management team early.
- Arrange for the necessary certificates of insurance.
- Identify holiday decorations and essentials that should remain accessible.
- Allow extra time for traffic and winter weather.
- Coordinate packing, moving, and unpacking schedules.
- Have a contingency plan in case weather disrupts your move.
If you absolutely must move between Christmas and New Year’s, aim for December 26 or 27, provided your buildings permit it. Better yet, see whether you can negotiate a few additional days into January.
Let Organize Me Handle the Details
One of the biggest advantages of hiring a professional move management team is being able to focus on your life while someone else handles the logistics.
We once coordinated a complicated holiday relocation involving a renovated apartment, belongings arriving from another property, and clients who were away for Christmas. We obtained special permission to work over the weekend and coordinated everything so they could return after New Year’s to a fully settled home.
That’s what move management in NYC can accomplish.
At Organize Me, we coordinate with buildings and movers, pack belongings, oversee moving day, and unpack and organize the new home. We even label cabinets and drawers with Post-it notes and photograph organized spaces so clients can easily find their belongings.
Our goal is simple: When you walk through the door, we want you to feel like you’re home.
